The primary employment in the area is based on agriculture and related industries. Food processing plants such as Diamond Walnut Growers Inc. and Sunsweet Growers Inc. are some of the largest area employers.

The Live Oak Unified School District and the Leo Chesney Center are the largest non-agricultural employers. The Leo Chesney Center/Cornell Corrections is a private correctional facility for women, which houses approximately 200 low-risk inmates.
